SAM's Your Throne is a cunning, revenge story about two rival Princesses who end up switching bodies with each other for a week. During the week they both realize they have terrible situations, and must overcome them if they want to find peace.
Psyche Callista of the Callista manor gets engaged to the first heir of the Vasilios Empire, Eros Orina Vasilios, the next divine ruler of their country, Unlike the rest of the country however, Medea Solon of the Solon household is not too ecstatic about it. Medea was disqualified from the competition as the Solons were "accused of attempting to assassinate a member of the Imperial Family." A rumor everyone believes causing even more distrust of the Solons. Angered by the removal, Medea sets out to destroy everything Psyche has.
Psyche wanting to give her condolences to her disqualified friend buys a ring for Medea. Medea feels it's adding salt to the wound and considers the ring a cheap trinket compared to Psyche's position. Medea creates a two-part plan to get her spy servant to poison Psyche's sugar cubes for tea while Medea sends her flowers to put by the bedside. Psyche's generosity is considered naivety to Medea as the inactive poison in the sugarcubes combines with the flowers into a non-lethal poison, but it wouldn't hurt if her servants think the poison could kill her.
On the monthly Day of Prayer, Psyche is required to enter the temple alone. A place not many people are allowed to enter to reduce corruption in the holy grounds. Medea bribes one of the priests to talk privately to Psyche. In a fit of rage, Psyche pushes Medea to the ground and asks,
"Do you resent me? Because I took His Highness from you? You don't even love him. My Lady, you only love his status and his throne!"
Medea doesn't deny it by answering,
"Then should I childishly swoon over the Prince and play House like you are? When the entire empire could be under my thumb?"
Psyche wants to be with Eros because she genuinely likes Eros, however, she feels that Medea only wants the throne just to take more power. While Medea feels that she can be a better ruler than Psyche.
When Medea falls into the water possibly used for baptisms, and Psyche jumps into the pool to pull her out, while drowning, Medea prays to the Guardian Deity to rule instead of the foolish Psyche, and take everything Psyche has.
Medea and Psyche both wake up to find out their bodies have been switched.
I will refer to their physical movements as "Medea" and "Psyche" using quotes as an imitation of their body movements.
"Psyche" wakes up to Psyche's servants worried about her. Eros, distraught that he might have lost her, Eros swears that Medea Solon will be sentenced to death. as much as Medea wants to Scream, "YES!" Medea has to keep up the appearance of "Psyche" and asks in the politest voice not to say something so frightful as a way to say "no," to Eros. "Medea" learning about what happened uses Medea's servants to escort her to the Vasilios castle to try and talk with Eros. However, Eros, angered at Medea tells her,
"You should be grateful that I don't behead you right here and now."
"Psyche", overjoyed at the dispute smiles at the fact that both Psyche and Eros are at the door, however Eros doesn't realize that the girl he loves is trapped in Medea's body. A few hours later, Medea notes all of the differences with Psyche's body starting with: a fragile body not used to war, a modest stature, and a falteringly sweet voice. It's a voice that can make even Medea's spy confess every infraction she has caused to Psyche. Medea tells herself that if she wakes up the next morning as Medea, she will kill her spy; If Medea wakes up as Psyche, she won't. The next day Medea wakes up as Psyche again.
Psyche wakes up afraid. Now that she's become "Medea," she can't handle the stress of having all of Medea's enemies. Medea's servants tend to see some happiness in their beloved "Medea." Psyche not fully knowing what Medea would do, tries to imitate Medea, but a kinder version. Psyche does not realize that Medea has a pen pal named Helio, nor does she realize that Medea has secret rituals to communicate with him.
Lord Helio travels to the Solon household to figure out what happened with Medea. He notices she isn't her usual self, and could even win against her in a duel, but he wants to save face and tries to act like she won. When he asks to accompany her to the banquet in a week, "Medea" addresses him as Helio instead of the pet name Heli. Helio is given a letter via cat to train Psyche as Medea before the banquet. An order Helio is more than happy to accept.
While Eros discusses the "Affairs of the Empire" "Psyche" picks up a book of the decline and fall of kingdoms predating the Vasilios Empire. Eros asks if the book was too difficult for her to understand.
"If you wanted to see pretty pictures, I would have bought you a book of fairy tales,"
he snidely remarks at "Psyche". It's at that point Madea notices Eros scornful look in his eyes. Eros despises Psyche and has no real affection for her.
After sending the message to Helio, and a ruse message to be intercepted, "Psyche" is confronted by Eros about a fake letter that Medea was going to forgive Psyche. Eros tired of "Psyche's" antics and making sure she doesn't get hurt, brings a bracelet and says
"A bracelet this size should be large enough to hide a bruise."
Eros then shackles "Psyche" again. Something that feels commonplace inside of the Vasilios house. Eros then brings her to the basement of the house. She will be locked up until the day of the banquet. Medea realizes it's not just Eros, but everyone in the Vasilios house is insane. The basement is like a normal study room, however this is the place that Psyche lived in until she turned sixteen.
Helio heads back to the Solon house secretly to train "Medea" before the party starting with reading twelve textbooks saying
"You need to transcribe at least half of what I've prepared to even begin imitating Lady Medea."
Medea as a child has read many different textbooks on economics, strategy, history, and anything else important that could make her a better scholar at the age of eight, and now Psyche has to read these if she wants to keep appearances as Medea. During the grooming, Psyche still tends to be herself while imitating Medea, and needs to mask those feelings of elation and jealousy seeing Eros again.
The two rivals lock eyes at the banquet hall when Eros and "Psyche" are announced into the hallway. As Medea locks eyes, she questions,
"I wonder how you see me today. The usurper of the one you love? or... The fool who now has to bear your misfortune?"
After learning about Ero's true colors, Medea realizes that everything she thought she wanted isn't actually there and still feels powerless to Eros, but wonders if Psyche knew about any of this. Helio quells Psyche's anger of not dancing with Eros,
The guests start staring at "Medea" in hopes that they can see a look of jealousy across the warmonger's face. Portraying the illusion of Medea, Psyche learns how to talk down to others as when the youngest daughter of Seira tries to say that Medea Solon has gone mad. This gives Psyche a chance to see if all of the learning has payed off. If she can fool everyone in a conversation, and still keep a straight face. "Medea" shocks everyone when she says,
"I have to have gone mad to overlook your insolence instead of having your heads handed to me on a platter."
A threat that turns the rest of the party guests against the daughter of Seira. Psyche has learned for a few days the hurdles Medea has to face everyday, and respects her for it. This may be the climax for Psyche in this arc, however the true climax for Medea is about to begin.
Helio sneaks over to "Psyche's" balcony. he gives "Psyche" a dagger in ribbon. "Psyche" is escorted by Eros' soldiers to see him in the gardens and that he has a gift for her.. The gift is her assassination. "Psyche" grabs the dagger provided by Helio, and kills one of the five knights sent to kill her. Medea realizes the Guardian Deity granted her wish to protect Psyche, and to have Medea die. Clinging to life, . Stricken with a venomous sword, Medea has to defeat skilled opponents that she can beat, but with Psyche's body, she has fragile arms that barely parry the blows. Helio and Psyche realize Medea is not at the recession and go in search for her. Meanwhile, "Psyche" has killed three knights now, and has to fight two more.
"It's so infuriating. I'm outraged that I must fight in your place like this. Perhaps, the real reason the Guardian Deity switched our bodies was so that I could die here instead of Psyche. and yet! I have lived my entire life vowing to overturn whatever fate throws at me!"
"Psyche" kills another soldier, but loses an eye in the process. Having to fight one more while exhausted, she grabs the last soldier, and impales him on a sharp rock behind herself.
Psyche and Helio run to Medea's aid, She has been critically wounded in Psyche's body, and because Psyche has no poison tolerance is completely helpless. Psyche is surprised to see the five dead soldiers on the ground. Medea grabs "Medea's" blouse and says,
"Why are you so surprised? They were all ordered to come and kill you. This was supposed to be your grave. So, how does it feel to have escaped death thanks to being blessed by the Guardian Deity?"
Psych realizing someone she knows wants her dead, tries to figure out who it is and came to her own shocking realization. The only person who knows what she's useful for is Eros, and he wants her dead.
Medea wakes up in Psyche's mental space, an underwater location full of walls and cracks to see through. she learns about Psyche's past in the basement, her questions to her mother on why she can't go outside like her mom, and her mom telling her a story about a curious princess who doubted if GOD truly loved her, and was cursed to sleep eternally as a fear tactic to keep her in the basement.
"I found it odd. Why must I believe in a GOD who claims to love me, but has never appeared before me?"
The person who helped her get a room out of the basement was Eros, the person she believed was her true God.
"It was like a dream. Looking back now, I think I had led an unhappy life. I finally realized the reason I was able to endure that life was because I had been ignorant of this wonderful world"
Medea learns there was no happy ending for Psyche in the first place. Medea realizes that the wall is what people use to protect themselves from the world. Psyche made a wish that she had never been born to the Guardian Deity so that she would've never had to suffer losing her first and best friend.
Medea answers to Psyche and the Guardian Deity "You wished you were as strong as I am. But it is I who could never be like you, even if I was born a thousand times over!"
The Guardian Deity asks what Medea is thinking after seeing Psyche's tragedies. "Why should we suffer when we have done no wrong," replied Medea? "I'm not a merciful person like Psyche so I cannot breathe my last until until the man responsible is brought to justice."
Psyche looks at her own body and cries out to the Guardian Deity to give her one more chance. She'll face everything head-on. Her tears and the necklace on Psyche's body shine together and fully heal "Psyche's" physical wounds.
In the end, Psyche and Medea both wanted the same things, freedom, friendship, and loyalty, however due to the circumstances of a few people, They lost trust and faith with each other becoming enemies. I'm glad that they both realize this and become better people learning what truly happened to their friendship, and can forgive each other for their wrongdoings. I can't wait to see how these two will handle Eros, as they learn he is the main target for all of their tragedies, and misconceptions, and how they'll overcome them together.
