Demoted from divine goddess to middle school graduate, Heavenly roommates looks like a good trainwreck of a comedy.
Approximately 2000 years ago, Myoryeong was a rabbit. The young rabbit gave birth to her first litter. Only one survived. Myoryeong cared for that one rabbit as much as she could and was content with her life.
A white tiger named Hanho captures Myoryeong's baby and threatens to eat it if she does not bring back a sweet known as "kkultteok" or honey rice cakes. Myoryeong follows through on her promise and steals the honey rice cakes back to Hanho. Hanho doesn't follow through on his promise. As he waited for Myoryeong to return, he ate her child and told her she took too long.
In her anger at losing her children, Myoryeong chooses to lie down and die. Her husband keeps trying to convince her that rabbits are only good for eating and being hunted, and he wants her to have another litter. Moryeong believes that she will not die if she stays in her burrow and won't be hunted or eaten if she doesn't go out. One day Myoryeong overhears two rabbits talking about Hanho. He's went somewhere far far away to undergo spiritual training.
If animals undergo spiritual training for 1000 years, they can become divine beings. If they get lucky, the animal can even become a mountain or land god, but is mostly reserved to predators like tigers. The more Myoryeong learns about spiritual training, the more determined she becomes to become a divine being, and ultimately leaves her burrow in search of such training.
Myoryeong, instead of the usual 1000 days of spiritual training an animal needs to become a divine being, becomes one in 500 years. The other beings call her a genius. Her speech to everyone is not to become a court lady of the jade emperor's palace, but the next jade emperor. "Once I am this heartless jungle into an ideal world." The divine beings start to think Myoryeong is no longer a genius, but a strange and foolish being.
after 1500 years, she became a more relaxed individual. As she accepted that she might not be the Jade emperor, she continued to be a normal divine being with the others by explaining that she was an immature child at the time. Angry at her lack of resolve, Samshin, god of birth, sends her on a special mission.
Samshin asks Myoryeong to go to earth in search of the udumbara, a legendary flower that represents salvation. Myoryeong asks how she can find something only found in legends. Samshin tells her that she can do it. She needs to find it to lift the human realm to a higher level so that it can find salvation. Myoryeong tells Samshin she is angered that she's being sent on a wild goose chase for some stupid flower, Samshin tells her that she is forbidden from returning to Heaven until she finds the udumbara. She asks why as she gets cast out of Heaven. Samshin's reply is that she abandoned her believes to settle for a comfortable life.
A year after being cast out, Myoryeong works as a part-time convenience store employee and restaurant waitress to pay for her rent and living expenses. She considers it slaving away at her miserable job. While walking back to her home, she sees a person sleeping on a bench with stray cats. His appearance is that of a stray until he opens his eyes. It's Hanho, the tiger that ate Myoryeong's child 2000 years ago.
After waking up, Hanho gives Myoryeong a scroll from Heaven. Myoryeong is instructed to work with Hanho in order to find the udumbara. Hanho seems to have forgotten Myoryeong, and she doesn't want to make him remember her because she wants revenge.
Myoryeong realizes Hanho is an airhead who is likely to follow most of her commands. His previous mountain was deforested, so if he wants another mountain, he'll have to involve her in finding the udumbara. He made Samshin a promise to find the udumbara. Hanho is a tiger of his word. Myoryeong knowing that's not the case askes if Hanho has ever gone back oh his word before? He replies "well, I wouldn't say that... but ever since I made a huge mistake in the day, I've been trying to keep my promises no matter what." Despite his remorse for eating Myoryeong's child, I still think it wasn't right.
Myoryeong tries to lower Hanho's defences by buying dinner. Hanho eats too much and puts Myoryeong into becoming a dish washer to pay for the dinner. She has to wash 29 bowls full of food that totals to $1,620. More money than she makes in a month.
Following a hearty meal, Hanho will live in... an outdoor box hilariously.. Myoryeong tells him that more humans live in boxes until they work towards getting a bigger house. To me however, it's like putting a tiger in a homeless box for an unwanted kitten.. Myoryeong just walks away giving Hanho the respect she thinks he deserves. Hanho smiles and looks at the moon in the sky enjoying his new view in his house.
Later that night, an old woman comes across Hanho in the box. He was out after curfew with the cats delivering tributes of dead animals to him. The old woman is disgusted with the way he accepted living in a box and asks who his family members are. According to Heaven, their id's have the two beings written down as siblings. Myoryeong realizes this and learns that she has to live with Hanho.
Myoryeong remembers when Heaven gave her a korean id, and considered her a middle school graduate. Nobody wanted to hire her, and she studied while living on the streets to get a GED in order to be hired. Eventually, she was able to get an apartment that she's using to help her succeed in her college entrance exam. She complained to Heaven about this, and made Hanho's certification a high school level graduate. Taking the box from outside she brings it inside and tells Hanho that he can live in the box from now on. Hanho considers this a win.
Hanho is informed by Myoryeong that he will have to pay the landlady rent every month to live in the apartment. She exaggerates the cost of rent to $1000 a month. To stay in the apartment, he will have to pay her $500 a month. The real rent is about $450 a month. Hanho tells her that he doesn't have any money.. She then assists him in finding a job.
After three weeks, Hanho hasn't been hired, and it's unclear why. Hanho eats too much and has accumulated $2000 in debt since he has lived with Myoryeong. With all of this debt, Myoryeong has to pay the debt off with no income from Hanho. In order to find out what's happening, she secretly follows him to his next interview. She learns that all of the hiring managers tremble with fear when he smiles.
The neighbor next door gets a knock from debt collectors, and Hanho scares them off with his eyes. He's strong enough to beat them, but Myoryeong tells him that if he hits them, he'll be arrested for assault. She then asks if he wants to be considered a criminal. Hanho answers with an abrupt no. Myoryeong passively warns him, "Anyway, I hope you find a job soon. Don't become a falure like our next-door neighbor. If you become a failure, you won't be able to find the udumbara either" This freaks out Hanho as the words keep echoing in his mind when he goes to look for another interview.
Hanho doesn't normally speak formally unless he addresses the jade emperor, but in order to get the job he tries to speak formally to the hiring manager of a coffee shop. He realizes that just like every other interview, the manager's pupils shake and get bags underneath their eyes. He realizes that he didn't get the job, and grabs this manager by the collar asking if he got the job?
Myoryeong asks the manager politely why he doesn't get the job. He explains to them that as soon as he made eye contact with Hanho, his body trembled as if he had run into a wild best in the mountains. This is semi-true because Hanho was previously a tiger.. Hanho realizes that as long as his eyes are showing, people feel uneasy around him. My solution is to just get some contacts. Even Sharingan contacts from Naruto wouldn't be as intimidating as his normal eyes, and wear those to the interview.
I like the fact that animal beings have to struggle to live in the modern day human world. It's really nice to feel relatable and unrelatable at the same time, and I hope they keep this dynamic throughout the comic. I might read this one more often just for the comedic moments.
With this I have finished up Webtoon's August Launch week. I really enjoyed this, and I learned many things from this that allowed me to read genres out of my comfort zone. I would like to do this again for the next launch week. For now, I am going to be on a 2 week hiatus to work on some things before coming back. Thank you for reading, and I hope you have a wonderful day. Keep hearting and commenting below.
